Dr Richard Walker’s Perspective
Photon Force was founded in 2015 as a university spin-out and has since become a global player in photonics and quantum technologies. The company’s growth has been fuelled by customer revenue and R&D projects, including both customer-funded and industry-led collaborative R&D projects funded by Innovate UK. This has assisted Photon Force in bringing cutting-edge single-photon sensitive products to the global market.
Drawing on this journey, Dr Walker will provide first-hand insights into navigating funding pathways as an early-stage business – from securing public innovation funding to scaling into international markets. His perspective represents the lived experience of technology-based entrepreneurs turning research into real-world impact.
“Access to funding is the lifeblood of any innovative start-up. At Photon Force, the right support at the right time helped us move from a university lab idea to a growing business with global customers. I’m looking forward to sharing our experience at ScaleUp Britain and highlighting how the right funding landscape can unlock innovation and scale across the UK,” said Dr Richard Walker, CEO of Photon Force.
